The Gilli-Hook Heritage Knitters Guild is a collection of individuals with a variety of interests, experience and focus, yet each member displays a fascination for the craft. The guild was formed on June 20, 1991 with a group of five founding members and has grown to over 100 members in 2009. While most members come from Calgary and surrounding areas, this is not a requirement. Through meetings, workshops and retreats, members share ideas, inspiration and techniques. At the regular monthly meetings it is common to have mini-workshops, guest speakers, donations to the charity knitting baskets and, of course, “show and tell”. Through monthly meeting minutes and the quarterly newsletter, members are informed of the guild happenings.
Library - The Guild library contains over 130 books, videos and pamphlets on a variety of traditions, techniques and patterns. All materials are available for loan to members. The library also contains many patterns for Charity Knitting.
Workshops and Guild Projects – Have you ever wanted to try a new technique or pattern? Do you have unfinished items in your closet? Attending a workshop or knit along may be the answer for you. Events for members are planned throughout the year.
Knitting Retreats – Retreats are held in the Spring and the Fall each year. The locations may change from year to year – but the format of an informal getaway to enjoy knitting-time and friendship does not. The retreat is open to all members.
Charity Knitting – Throughout the year, much knitting is done on a voluntary basis for charities, and guild members have proven to be very generous with their donated items to seniors, cancer patients, newborn and premature infants and others in need. Completed Items can be brought to the meetings where they will be distributed to an appropriate agency, including the Bethany Care Centre, the Louise Dean Center, Strathmore Crisis Center. |
